Whether you’re a beginner, or have a love for abstract art but have never taken a class, I highly recommend this online course. Betty Franks will take you through her Fields of Flowers from start to finish. So often, online courses seem to begin with that first stroke of paint. This course however, will take you through the supplies you will use, how to prep your paper, how to create mark making, how to loosen up before you begin, and encourage you to paint what inspires you. I often struggle with use of color. I loved the module dedicated on how to mix colors. Now my paintings from warm colors to cool, flow in a well balanced way. After completeing this course, I feel as though I have much more confidence on how to begin, taking away the intimidation that can come with starting an abstract piece. Filmed from above, you always have a clear vision of what is being done at all times. I never found myself rewinding to see what I missed. Not only that, but after purchasing, this class is always available for you to come back to if needed. Beyond five stars!

Loved the class. Your YouTubes make it look so easy, but the class slows it down and digs deeper. So glad I invested in it. Very good instructor style, every module was awesome.

This refreshing course captures an established artist’s process as she produces a singular piece beginning with surface preparation and composition decisions through bonus material showcasing an excellent overview of tonality and protective finish options. I particularly liked Betty’s conversational style. During filming, she shows working through challenges in real time. She deals with the inevitable procrastination stages that arise during the creative process. She embraces unexpected results inherent in a loose approach to abstract art as well as how and why she chooses to correct other outcomes. While sharing memories of her own beginner mishaps, she includes tips for recognizing, avoiding and working through awkward stages with a frank and natural voice. She is never condescending or slick or rehearsed. Betty talks honestly through her process as if she is speaking to an audience of peers. I recommend this course for beginners and intermediates interested in watching one artist use mixed media tools to create original, successful abstract works. I look forward to more courses as this artist builds her library of knowledge. Thank you!!

I love all the tips you give for each stage of the painting. I feel it helps to explain the reasoning behind why you do the layering of marks and the filling in of spaces. I did find myself watching more than doing at some points and I think it was because I didn’t see what you saw, I thought every original mark and than all the changes were great but I did see, at the end, that what you did made more sense for your style. Mark making cheat sheet, loved that idea as I sometimes find myself wondering what marks to add that enhance my painting or help to tell the story I’m trying to convey. Having this to build upon will certainly help when I’m “stuck”. Building a palette Gave me the ok to mix my colors. Choosing a simple palette to make more cohesive palette kind of takes away the stress of deciding what colors to use. I’m certainly one to label things so I know what I used to get there help keep the process moving. I am working on convincing myself that less is more when it comes to colors but finding it difficult as I just love all colors! This segment really has my wheels turning and I think soon I’ll be enjoying more simpler palettes. I loved watching you work through some of your decisions. It showed me I’m not always crazy when I think out loud or when I pick out some places that need more or less work. Thank you for allowing those to be ok! I think this is a great course for beginners and for those that want to try a different view of abstract art. I have always loved abstract art and am finding my style the more I work. I have watched all your videos and have picked up quite at few staples that I put into my work every time as I find it helps me to create strong intuitive pieces. I just want to thank you for all of your efforts in sharing your work, knowledge, and lessons learned throughout your career! I really feel like you are a great mentor, teacher and of course, artist! Thank you so much, again, for this opportunity I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and will always refer back to it when I need some ideas and help.

I have taken several different painting courses and learned a little something from each one. Then I discovered Betty Frank's art. If only I could paint like that! When Betty announced she was going to teach a course I quickly signed up. And am I glad I did! Her course offers so much good, honest advice and she is such a wonderful teacher. Being able to watch and paint with Betty as she progressed through a painting was priceless. I learned so much about mixing colors, layering paint and mark making and so much more. If you take only one painting course take Betty Frank's. You won't be disappointed!

Step-by-Step Instruction

Join me as we take each step in the creative process together, working on 12x9" paper. You’ll learn to loosen up and create marks. Plus, I’ll talk you through my thought process and explain why I put down marks and use colors where I do. You’ll find this guided portion of the training helpful in understanding how to build an abstract painting.

Loosen Up

Our first exercise together will be all about loosening up. I’ll share several ways to relax and enjoy the early stages of creating without stress.

Harmonize Colors

Why do some paintings look like the colors were meant to be together? As we dive into this exercise using acrylic paints, you’ll quickly learn how to harmonize your colors, leading you to create beautiful artwork.

Cheat Sheet

We’ll create a cheat sheet so that you can reference it while making art. This will help you with your composition as we work through a piece together.

Bright, Happy Colors

I’ll teach you my trick for keeping acrylic colors bright and cheerful. Mud is great sometimes, but not when you want colors that evoke happiness.

BONUS:

Values Exercise

Did you know that we see values before we see color? In this bonus exercise, you’ll learn how to build a painting that draws the viewer in using only the values scale.

BONUS:

Protecting Your Artwork

Now that you have created your masterpiece using acrylics and pencils/crayons, you’ll want to protect it from the elements. I’ll walk you through the steps and products I use to ensure the water-soluble marks don’t smear and the colors stay vivid for years to come.

Who is this course for?

Let's get creative together!

Hi, I'm Betty. It wasn't that long ago that I was working a 9-5 job in corporate America. When my weekend passion turned to creating, I spent hours trying to figure it all out. I would love to help you get there a bit faster by teaching you what I have learned through trial and error (mostly fun mistakes!). I have a love for creating abstract fields of flowers and I want to share that love with you. I'm a self-taught artist who started her creative journey late in life (50!), however, the timing was actually just right. After a long career in customer service management, I was ready to unleash my creative side. Combined with my love for helping others, I'll take you by the hand and walk you through the creative process. I hope you'll join me!

Why creatives love this course

“I loved this class so much. I’d followed Betty for years and had watched just about every video she’d made so I actually debated whether the class would offer anything new…the short answer is YES! Betty is an excellent teacher not just teaching the “how” but the “why” as well. She takes her students on a journey from beginning to end allowing us to paint right along with her. No stone is left unturned and her teaching style is simple, concise and thorough. I cannot recommend this class enough. I learned so much and cannot wait to put some of this new found knowledge into practice. ❤️”

Sharon S.

“You can't help but love Betty. She is sincere and knowledgable, fun and generous. I am an educated, experienced artist, and I loved this course. It is clear and concise. Betty is encouraging and has made it easy to watch and follow for any level. If you have any doubts about your own ability to produce art from your inner spirit, this is a beautiful path toward clearing them.”

Lynda L.

“Get the paint, take the course—you won’t be sorry! Betty walks you through her process step by step all the while giving you skills and tools to follow along. She is easy on the ears and fascinating to watch. I especially like to listen to her think out loud and work through “the uglies”. I came away with skills and encouragement to try some new things in my own work. If you are on the fence, jump in—you will not find a better value and enjoyable abstract class!”

Riley G.

“From start to finish I found the course very user-friendly, easy to navigate, with perfect lighting, pleasantly light and bright, and with good sound and a good, clear and focused view of her workspace, the piece that she's creating, and how she creates it. The way she walks "us" through the whole process is comprehensible, easy to understand, inspiring, and very thorough and insightful. The bonus videos are fantastic and very insightful and are a bonus in the real sense of the word; there's a lot to learn and experience from painting in just Black and White, very useful!”

Ellen V.

“This is the first course I’ve taken from Betty, though I’ve been following her on YouTube for over a year now. She teaches in a way that is relaxed, engaging and one can absorb all the information without feeling overwhelmed. This course packs in a ton of information about shape, form, color, uniformity, variety, mark making and much more. What I learned about color mixing and coordinating was a different approach than any way I’ve been taught to color mix before! It makes so much sense to me now. I can’t tell you how stoked I am to start practicing everything I learned from these classes! Oh... and the bonus classes! Sooo much great information too!”

Tuesday M.

“Fields of Flowers! Loved this new course from Betty. She’s such a gifted artist and teacher. My favorite part was the bonus video on values. Over an hour of painting in black and white and further exploring Fields of Flowers. I’ve done black and white paintings before, but this one resonated with me. I’d even recommend doing this video before jumping into color. Regardless, it was great to work step by step through the process, hearing Betty’s decisions for fixing "mistakes" and creating a stronger painting.”

Wendy F.
